A Romantic Backyard Wedding in Howell, Michigan || Mackenzie & CJ

CJ and Mackenzie’s Thursday wedding at his family home in Howell was a beautiful reminder that a meaningful wedding doesn’t need to be complicated. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, they created a day that felt personal, relaxed, and completely true to them.

The couple was home on leave from the military and chose to spend that precious time celebrating with their closest family and friends. Instead of a traditional venue, they said their vows in the backyard where everyone could gather together, relax, and simply enjoy being present for such an important day.

The setting couldn’t have been more beautiful. Their ceremony took place beneath a large tree on the property, creating the most romantic backdrop. With the summer sunshine filtering through the leaves and flowers tucked into every corner, it felt like stepping into a secret garden. It was the perfect mix of elegant and cozy.

One of my favorite things about the day was how personal every detail felt. The bride wore a gorgeous vintage-inspired gown paired with a floral veil that fit the garden atmosphere perfectly. Vintage books, antique dishes, and beautiful florals were thoughtfully woven throughout the décor. Nothing felt trendy or overdone. Instead, every detail seemed to tell part of their story and create a space that felt warm and welcoming.

The ceremony itself was filled with meaningful traditions and moments that reflected not only their relationship, but also the importance of family. You could feel how much love surrounded them throughout the entire day.

Afterward, everyone gathered for a homemade dinner, sharing food, stories, and laughter around the tables. There was something so refreshing about the simplicity of it all. No rushing from one event to the next. No pressure to stick to a packed timeline. Just a group of people who genuinely loved this couple and wanted to celebrate them.

One thing that stood out to me all day was how kind everyone was. From the moment I arrived, their family and friends made me feel less like a vendor and more like a guest. As a wedding photographer, those are the days that stick with you. When people welcome you into their circle, it allows you to capture the day in such a genuine way.

My favorite part of the day was listening to the speeches from both of their dads. I don’t think there was a dry eye in sight, including mine. Hearing them talk about their children with so much pride and love was incredibly moving. As a parent myself, those moments always hit a little harder. Watching parents reflect on the people their children have become and the new chapter they’re beginning together is something I’ll never take for granted.

As the evening came to a close, the sunset gave us the most beautiful light for portraits. The warm glow, the garden-inspired details, and the joy surrounding these two made for the perfect ending to an already unforgettable day.
